About Head to Health Kids

Culturally responsive care

Head to Health Kids is adapted to be responsive to the needs of Central Australian communities, offering a culturally responsive service which works with children and their families. This includes working in bi-cultural pairs that bring Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal ways of knowing and doing, coming together to create a high functioning space for knowledge co-creation
and holistic practice.

Practical, accessible Help

Head to Health Kids prioritises early identification and intervention, and provides practical education and support to parents, caregivers and educators in the child’s home, childcare or educational setting and community, providing wrap around support and education to the key people in the child’s life to help improve their child’s mental health, stability and wellbeing.

A Collaborative Approach

Head to Health Kids is a multidisciplinary team supporting children with suspected or emerging mental illness or behavioural challenges. Team members work collaboratively to undertake a caseload involving assessment, care planning, intervention and support to assist families in promoting their child’s health and development. The service integrates with other Congress and external services to coordinate the most effective and appropriate client care.

Working for Congress

For more than 50 years, Central Australian Aboriginal Congress (Congress) has provided support and advocacy for Aboriginal people in the struggle for justice and equity.

Since that time, Congress has expanded to become the largest Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation in the Northern Territory, providing a comprehensive, holistic and culturally responsive primary health care service to Aboriginal people living in and nearby Alice Springs, including nearby remote communities; Amoonguna, Ntaria (and Wallace Rockhole), Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa), Utju (Areyonga), Imanpa, Yulara, Kaltukatjara  and Mutitjulu.

Today, we are one of the most experienced Aboriginal primary health care services in the country, a strong political advocate of closing the gap on Aboriginal health disadvantage and a national leader in improving health outcomes for all Aboriginal people.

“I love working for an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service because the clients that we work with and for are at the forefront of everything we do. There’s also greater flexibility around how we work, compared to other workplaces. There is a level of trust and mutual respect within this model of healthcare that allows for true and meaningful connection to grow between clinicians and clients. With support from team members within CYATS, as well as other divisions within Congress, a lot of the clients that I work with are genuinely able to get their needs met, and over time take greater ownership of their health care and education. Through this, I have witnessed huge changes in my client’s and their family’s lives…”
