Remote Health Service

Health clinics located in small aboriginal communities are not large enough to support their own administrative and financial requirements.  They also need access to specialised services.  To help overcome these problems Congress auspices five small health services providing services to nine remote aboriginal communities around Alice Springs.  They are:

  • Areyonga (Utju) Health Service
  • WAHAC – Western Aranda Health Aboriginal Corporation covering Hermannsburg ( Ntaria), Areyonga (Utju) and Wallace Rock Hole – WAHAC operates these service jointly with DH & F Remote
  • Mutitjulu Health Service
  • Amoonguna Health Service
  • Santa Teresa Health Service

Remote Health Services also supervises

  • Regional Eye Health Project  providing services throughout Central Australia
  • Alcohol & other Drugs Project providing services to Mutitjulu, Amanpa and Santa Teresa

Over seventy staff are currently employed delivering these services and this is expected to rise to over ninety in the near future.  An additional “Allied Health Team” based in Alice Springs will travel throughout Central Australia providing education and services to identified clients with diabetes.
The Remote Health Service is heavily involved with the initiative to regionalise health services in Central Australia.  This initiative will provide viable independent services into communities with populations over 3,000 people.
