Kurunna Mwarre Summit: Making my spirit inside me good

CANCELLATION: This notice is to advise that the Kurunna Mwarre: Listen to me summit, due to be held at Ross River from Tuesday 14 to Thursday 16 May, has been cancelled.

Regretfully, the cancellation is due to widespread rain across Central Australia adversely impacting on both the event venue and delegates from bush communities who have been unable to travel to the venue due to road weather conditions around the region. More rain is forecast across Central Australia over the coming days.

For Aboriginal people of all ages, male and female, to speak up strong to find local solutions to local problems, to health the past and make our community and culture strong.

Sick of violence, losing our young people, going to sorry business, being sad, angry, frustrated, hurt and the lack of respect?

Want to be listened to and help find local solutions to local problems to provide a safe, supportive place for your family and community, with a strong culture and a future for our grandchildren?

This summit is for both males and females of all ages, including young people, parents, leaders and elders, to come together to talk, listen to each other, heal and make our spirits inside us strong.

People who are willing to speak up and develop positive ideas are invited to come along to this summit so we can present ideas to politicians, police, mayor and others - and make them listen.

The summit will be held over three days. On the third day, an open session will be held where delegates will report back on what they believe are possible solutions to the issues of violence and anti-social behaviour, such as:

  • Taking responsibility for the past and healing their spirit to make themselves strong
  • Identifying local solutions to local issues that have local ownership to bring about change
  • Plan how in the future, Aboriginal people can work together to get the skills and knowledge to sustain change

The summit is co-facilitated by Central Australian Aboriginal Congress and Creating a Safe Supportive Environment Inc (www.casse.org.au) and follows on from previous summits facilitated by Congress’ Ingkintja male health branch, held in 2008 and 2010, where hundreds of Aboriginal males came together to address issues of violence and hurt in Aboriginal communities.
