| The Future Congress has become a major provider of health care services in Central Australia. We have established a reputation locally, nationally, and internationally as a leader in the field of indigenous primary health care. We continue to work for a coordinated, well-funded national effort to tackle the greatest health problem that Australia faces today. Despite the misconceptions, there have never been large amounts of government money put specifically towards addressing the problems of Aboriginal health. Recent studies show that even now, for every dollar spent on non-Aboriginal health, only $1.10 is spent on Aboriginal health - yet our health is many times worse than that of non-Aboriginal Australia. Congress is committed to ensuring that every dollar allocated for Aboriginal health improvement is effective in improving the lives and health of those who need it the most. We have established an open and cooperative relationship with government; we intend to maintain and develop these relationships while standing up for our rights as a representative of our people. At the same time, we will continue to deliver effective health services in an appropriate way. Although many things have changed since Congress was established in 1973, the basic inspiration for Congress remains: an organisation of Aboriginal people, for Aboriginal people, controlled by Aboriginal people. |
